Over the years I've monitored this board, there's been a wealth of knowlege about all types of topics bantered about. Here's one I'd like to challenge my fellow busnuts to help answer:

I'm curious to know just how the powertrain packaging affects the interior space. So I'm asking those owners of a 4104, 4106, 4107/8, 4905, MC-5(a,b,c), MC-8, MC-9, Eagle (1,5,10,15) or Prevost, and who can run a tape straight down the center of the coach, if you would please measure (in inches) the distance from the base of the dashboard in the vestibule area to the base of the first engine "hump" in the rear of the coach, and please either post the results here, or email me directly. Once I compile the data, I'll share it with everyone.

(Note to Buffalo, Eagle and Prevost owners: Due to the lower vestibule area, please take your measurement using some type of vertical item (a board, etc.) placed against the dash in order to get an accurate horizontal measurement. Besure to add the thickness of the vertical to the length obtained. Thanx)

I shall now head out to my own coach to start the process. . .

Thanks for your help!

I don't know if it matters but my MCI 96A3 had a galley installed where the rear seats normally are, that said, my coach is about 2 inches shy of 35 feet to the base of the galley cabinets.

Gee, I hope RJ isn't STILL out measuring!

You think maybe he's using a 1" micrometer?

So at about 35 feet, that equates to 0.00576025918 nautical miles or about 0.053030303 furlongs, in case anyone was wondering. . . Can you measure furlongs with a metric caliper?

Brian, I'm here, just couldn't get to the coach until today, due to rain and the holidays.

My 4106 measures 925cm (only tape I had at the time), which translates to 364.17", or 30.35'.

Using the info many of you supplied, it looks like nearly all the coaches utilize between 87-88% of their exterior length for interior space, however:

[sound of drum roll]

"The winner is. . ."

The Eagle (rust and all - j/k)! Based on the info TD supplied, 91% of it's exterior length is available inside, making it the "most spacious" of this little survey. Find yourself a wide-body southwestern Model 15, and you'll have lots of room to play!

Thanks again, everyone, for sharing and participating, appreciate your assistance. Now I've got to get ready for Sky West, Delta and Enterprise RAC to get me to Arcadia!

Happy New Year, everyone!

468 inches (39 feet), the bus, H3-41 is 41 feet, although I have not measured it. this is slighlty over 95% utilization.

RJ,
Sorry to be so late with this post, but my bus was at the dealer getting new shocks and a few other things. Although they promised they would, they did nothing on it over the holidays which was very disapointing.

I measured from the back wall to the front edge of the dash. The floor is flat to the back wall. The drivers side back wall has a small box that protrudes 8", is 10.5" tall and runs 27 1/2" from the side wall toward the center (less than 1/3 of the width of the bus). This small box is for the radiator overflow tank, I did not reduce the floor measuremet for this. The other side currently has my bathroom, but it does not look like there are any other protrusions from the engine compartment into the inside area of the bus. Even if you count the box as reducing the flat floor, there is still better than 93% space utilization.

The drivers portion of the dash extends a maximum of 6" into the bus area for radio etc. It is slightly angled, so that most of the drivers dash protrudes less than the 6" ino the interior space.

Hope this helps, and it may take the prize for best use of space (now if my design when finished can be worthy too...)
