Absolutely. I just purchased a trailer yesterday to haul my dozer on and it is very rusted and badly in need of a paint job.

Point of interest. I paid $2000 for it. Sales tax in most areas would have been at least 6%,($120) with registration fees depending on the overall weight or weight capacity.

I obtained a class C license plate for $60 and it is a one time fee and there is no weight limitation on it. No sales tax required.

I have to get it inspected anually to see if the lights work. No brake inspection required and inspection is only $12.

First good deal I have ever gotten from a DMV anywhere. LOL

here goes...I've been restoring old cars & airplanes & bus stuff for years..(ran a bodyshop)
get a small grinder & knock-off the loose stuff & brush with a wire brush... :
0ne part fiberglass resin...(autozone, etc.)
one part black enamel.......(hardware store)
one part laquer thinner.... (paint supply)

only mix-up what you can brush on in 30 minutes
if it is going to be exposed to the sun..additional coat of paint in three days

Two Dogs,
Do you add the hardener to the resin or use resin without the hardner?

I'm still tryin to figure out what happens when you mix polyester, oil-based paint and laquer thinner.

POR-15 is (I think) a Phosphoric Acid derivative that converts rust to a ferric phosphate, sealing the metal from further oxidation. Here is a good explanation:

it works guys...only drawback ,it needs to be 60 degrees or better..so, get it on before the weather turns sour....DO NOT ADD HARDNER

Two Dogs--

Really, there's nothing in your formula that can be a rust inhibitor. Tony's remark relates to the fact that the stuff shouldn't even mix up, but even If we grant you that, and you can get this mixture to congeal, the best that you have is a mechanical-bond barrier. Rust will form behind these kinds of barriers, although you can't see it.

POR-15, Phosphoric Acid (Naval Jelly), and any of those are called "Rust Converters" that change Ferric Oxide to ferric phosphate.

Ferric Oxides do not inhibit further oxidization, a ferric phosphate encapsulates the ferrous materials and prevent Oxides from occurring.

There are some new Epoxy based products, like Ameron that use an Epoxy-base Mechanical bond to encapsulate rust, these products are $130/gal.

I have two, very big Steel boats. I've spent more than just a little time on this subject.

Your magic formula falls outside the boundaries of physics.

Do you use polyester or epoxy fiberglass resin? Jack

Um--two dogs,

You use thinner to clean enamel from your gun BECAUSE they don't mix.

Why would I try a goofy mix up like that on my most prized possesion? There are products on the market that are readily available and are guaranteed to do the job (They're actually amazing).

I'm only responding to your post because I think you're giving bad advice. I KNOW what works, I've spent an enormous amount of time in this exact area of knowledge. Others with less experience might actually try what you're telling them.

As for big words, try small and work your way up.

"Stopping" has two "P"s in it.

POR-15 works. Period. In fact, I've used it many times.

Tony is right--enamel & laquer won't mix properly.

I have a real bad place on my 04 rear door that sounds like this would be the perfect repair kit.
Thanks Two Dogs for the fix.

Well, this conversation has really developed into a mind-expanding discussion.

I belong to several lists related to boating, musclecars, or my bus projects, it never fails that there is some blowhard trying to tell everyone how smart he is. Of course, nobody buys his crap, and he's continually making a fool of himself.

Hmmm ... this has been interesting!
Now if the world was just round, and man could fly ... it seems that unless it has been tried, it shouldn't be discounted.
